Rosemary hedge

October 27, 2007

I’ve written about my world’s-happiest sage plant, but haven’t yet mentioned my equally ecstatic rosemary beds. Planted in the front yard where previous plants ranged from mediocre to failures, the rosemary has thrived. I simply wanted a low-maintenance plant that would serve as a ground cover. I got two hedges that produce herbs that we use in the kitchen all the time. The light blue flowers that cover the rosemary hedges from time to time are another bonus.

Below is a shot of the largest of my two rosemary beds just after I spent yesterday morning trimming it:

I took about 18 inches off the top and six inches off the sides. The rosemary hedge attracts bees when it is in bloom (which is often), but I trimmed away and they buzzed away and we didn’t seem to bother each other.

I sometimes think that my two rosemary beds could supply all of Morgan Hill. I wonder if I should sell my organic rosemary at the farmer’s market on Saturday mornings.

I also spent a lot of time and energy cleaning up the New Zealand flax plant that came with the house. I pulled scores of dead, dry leaves and clipped the rosemary to make room for the flax plant.
