A Republican Senator up for re-election, Gordon Smith of Oregon, is touting his work with Barack Obama in the Senate in a new ad, the AP reports. But Obama’s not the only Democrat that Smith mentions as he campaigns for re-election:
Smith has studiously avoided any mention of his GOP credentials in his ads and campaign literature. A recent ad featured two Democrats, including former Oregon Rep. Elizabeth Furse, praising Smith for speaking out against the Iraq war in December 2006, after Republicans lost control of Congress.
I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised, with President George Bush’s sub-30-percent approval ratings, that Smith would want to distance himself from the increasingly unpopular president. But his party’s nominee, John McCain, is also a fellow Senator. Didn’t he work with McCain on anything that he cares to tout?
It’s not a good omen for the GOP this fall.
