The Anonymous Liberal effectively counters the argument that many on the right have been advancing — that torture is effective — with this reminder:
Torture is categorically prohibited by numerous laws and treaties. It’s illegal. Indeed, it’s a war crime. Ethnic cleansing may also be an “effective” way of accomplishing certain strategic goals, but that doesn’t make it any less reprehensible or illegal.
In the fundamentalist Christian schools and churches I attended in my youth, we were constantly told that “the ends do not justify the means.” Why have those on the right — many of them on the religious right — conveniently forgotten this?
