It turns out that the right wingers that Stephen Colbert mocks so effectively on his show don’t understand that basic premise: The show is a parody. Here’s a quote from the Boston Globe’s report on an Ohio State University study entitled “The Irony of Satire: Political Ideology and the Motivation to See What You Want to See in The Colbert Report”:
Although both liberals and conservatives thought Colbert was funny, conservatives tended to think that Colbert really meant what he said, while liberals assumed that Colbert was just kidding.
Conservatives, when Stephen Colbert says, for example, that Florida Rep. Bill Posey is the illegitimate son of an alligator, he’s joking. This isn’t difficult. The show is on Comedy Central.
