Because so many of us are ignorant. Sounds harsh, but look at the evidence:
- 75 percent of Oklahoma high school students can’t name the first president of the United States.
- 3 percent of Oklahoma high school students could pass the US citizenship test that 92 percent of immigrants pass on the first try.
- 55 percent of Americans don’t believe in the fact of evolution.
Wingnuts rely on their audiences swallowing everything they say without thought, evaluation, or fact-checks. They rely on their audiences reacting with their guts, not their heads. They rely on their audiences having no appetite for analyzing assertions but an enormous appetite for having their worldview reinforced at every turn and never challenged. In short, they rely on their audiences having a shocking lack of basic knowledge and zero critical thinking skills.
Given those depressing statistics, it’s really no wonder that so many people buy laughable, easily disprovable lies like those told about John Kerry during the 2004 election, Barack Obama during the 2008 election, and the health-care reform debate in the 90s and today.
But it does make me worry for the future of this great nation.
