Editors are important, part 60

CNN has the following disagreeable headline on its web site right now:

Mom, baby dies during labor, revived.

Here’s a screen shot:

It’s not disagreeable because the mom and baby were revived by Western medicine practitioners, but because the plural subject (Mom, baby) is disagreeably matched with a singular verb (dies).

Two singular elements paired still make a plural headline and require a plural verb, such as this:

Mom, baby die during labor, revived
