Tempted to be a written word poseur?

Read this advice from author and writing coach William Zinsser and reconsider:

Remember: how you write is how you define yourself to people who meet you only through your writing. If your writing is pretentious, that’s how you’ll be perceived. The reader has no choice.

That applies to other impressions, not just pretention. For example, if your writing is sloppy, you’ll be perceived that way.

Take care with your writing, and if you’re not confident that it’s creating the appropriate impression, check with a good editor.
