What are they so afraid of?

What is so scary about same-sex couples that a school district would have rules specifically banning them from proms, and, when asked to change those rules, cancels the prom instead? That’s what has happened in northern Mississippi, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports:

The Itawamba County School District has canceled prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School.

The district announced the cancellation in a one-paragraph statement issued late Wednesday afternoon. It said that the district hoped that “private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors.”

The decision comes one week and one day after the district received a letter from the ACLU of Mississippi demanding that it allow a female student to attend the April 2 dance with her girlfriend.

The civil liberties organization gave the district until Wednesday to change its policy to either allow same-sex prom dates or possibly face legal action.

This is the face of Constance McMillen, the 18-year-old student who prompted so much fear, panic, and hatred among the Itawamba County School District board:

What canceled this prom was bigotry, pure and simple. It’s completely un-American and despicable. I hope the ACLU sues the pants off this school district. These kinds of stories (a similar story with a different outcome took place in Alabama late last year) highlight the fear-based and logic-free ‘thinking’ that goes into opposition to homosexuals. Combine these stories with the Catholic Church’s hateful reactions to the approval of same-sex marriage in Washington, D.C., and a Catholic preschool’s refusal to re-enroll the child of lesbian parents, and you’ve got one ugly picture painted with homophobia, hatred and bigotry.

Our children will be ashamed of us. Too bad the members of Itawamba County School Board who canceled their prom and Catholic Church officials who hurt innocent victims to to avoid dealing with homosexuals don’t have enough sense of decency to be ashamed of themselves.

Update 3/11/2010 1:10 pm PST:

ABC News reports that 18-year-old Constance McMillen, the girl who asked the Itawamba County School District to change the rules barring same-sex couple from the prom, has filed suit to get the prom reinstated and the no-same-sex couples rule lifted. Good for her.
